The easiest and most effective way to hang anything on a wall is to use a wall anchor. This includes larger picture frames, paintings and even shelves. The size of the anchor you need depends on the weight of the object you intend to hang. What happens if you don’t use an anchor? In all likelihood larger items like shelves and paintings will go crashing to the floor.
Installing a wall anchor is fairly easy, especially when you are hanging smaller items. If there is no available stud for the anchor screw or the Fasteners , an anchor can be inserted into the drywall alone and it will support items of up to ten pounds.
However, if there is an available stud, it is always best to use one for items that are near the ten pound weight limit. Wall anchors are often a cinch to install in studs, once they are found, of course. To locate these studs you may have to use an electronic device called a stud finder. They can be purchased at any hardware or home improvement centre for about ten pounds.
When should you use the stud? As we mentioned, with items over ten pounds it is important to use the stud. What kind of items might you hang that weigh more than ten pounds? Until only a few years ago, large paintings and mirrors were the only items that had to be attached to a stud. But with the popularity of wall mounted flat screen television sets, the practice is quite common.
On average, a flat screen set weighs about forty pound, which is obviously much too heavy to simply hang on the wall from a couple of anchors. These sets must be attached to a metal mount which is then screwed directly into the stud.
