DIY is not solely a past-time of the British and Americans, it is extremely popular in many countries of the world. Whether you want to fit your own raambekleding in the Netherlands, your own volets in France or even okonniy staven in Russia, there are plenty of people doing it.
In Russia and the Ukraine for example, many people are renovating the old Soviet style apartments to make them into modern day apartments and DIY is catching up at an incredible rate. Many people now own their own apartments and naturally they want to make the best of them.
The old style balconies which looked like they were precariously perched onto the face of the building are being replaced by chic conservatory style balconies, somewhere to sit and enjoy a beer or a vodka rather than somewhere to dry the clothes and dump the old bikes.
In the former eastern European countries too DIY is a way of life, such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Many of the DIY superstores that are now common throughout Europe are to be found there. People that had to live in state apartments twenty years ago are now taking pride in ownership of their new homes.
So next time you get out your paintbrush or screwdriver, trying to imagine what people are doing to their houses in other countries of the world.
