Making your Dream Holiday Home a Reality

Many people dream of owning there own home in the sun. This dream can become a reality for many people, due to the affordability and accessibility of property in Mediterranean countries such as Spain, Greece and Italy.

As is the case in the UK, property prices in these countries vary considerably. For instance, villas in Marbella tend to be far more expensive than those in less fashionable resorts or further inland.

In order to purchase an affordable property in a prime location, you will need to look at those needing refurbishment and development, which is much the case in the UK. (more...)

Get Creative with DIY Furniture!

Do it yourself furniture can open up a world of creativity and uniqueness, that no store bought furniture can. And by DIY furniture I do not mean furniture that you can take home and assemble yourself. I am talking about furniture that you can design yourself, build yourself, paint yourself, and then use yourself!

When you are building your own furniture, you can design and create whatever you want according to your own needs. For example, you can customise your living room shelf with special nooks and crannies for everything. You can even make a special little shelf for that ever elusive phone book, and even one for the tv listing magazine!

One of the main, although certainly not the most important, benefit of doing it yourself is the money you can save. If you can source the best materials for the best value, you can have full control on how much you want to spend and stick to it! (more...)

Buying Real Estate in Costa de Sol

The Spanish real estate boom of the late 20th century gave birth to some of the most popular tourist destinations on the face of the earth. One of them was the Costa del Sol, or Coast of the Sun. Formerly a series of small fishing towns, the region was transformed into a tourist hotspot in the 1980s and 90s.

For more than a decade, the resorts in the Costa del Sol region were among the most popular in the nation, welcoming millions of guests each year. Then the Spanish property bubble popped and home values went south faster than a duck in winter.

When the smoke cleared, the properties had lost about half of their value. Tourism also took a huge hit as families cancelled vacations during the recession. Now, two years later, the tourists are starting to return to the region along with the investors. Most foreign real estate shoppers are looking for luxury properties like villa rentals Costa del sol . (more...)

Popular All Over the World

DIY is not solely a past-time of the British and Americans, it is extremely popular in many countries of the world. Whether you want to fit your own raambekleding in the Netherlands, your own volets in France or even okonniy staven in Russia, there are plenty of people doing it.

In Russia and the Ukraine for example, many people are renovating the old Soviet style apartments to make them into modern day apartments and DIY is catching up at an incredible rate. Many people now own their own apartments and naturally they want to make the best of them.

The old style balconies which looked like they were precariously perched onto the face of the building are being replaced by chic conservatory style balconies, somewhere to sit and enjoy a beer or a vodka rather than somewhere to dry the clothes and dump the old bikes. (more...)

DIY, Are We Becoming Obsessed?

DIY is often known as a national obsession, but is this becoming a literal description of our love for this time consuming and often frustrating national sport? Never has there been so much passion and heart-break associated with what in reality can be a mundane and boring task.

Whether we are fitting new skirting boards in the lounge or replacing wooden blinds in the study, the possibility of some sort of emotional out-break is high. DIY necessitates a high level of patience and calm, especially as much of it is repetitive, but the moment something goes wrong, all hell breaks loose.

Why does it mean so much to us? (more...)

Can We Shop Around?

Our country's obsession with DIY is bigger than ever, especially due to the fact that we are in the middle of one of the most severe economic recessions for decades. Many of us simply have no money to spare on hiring in professionals to do the job so we are picking up a paintbrush or hammer ourselves to save money.

But can we save even more money by shopping around and buying the materials we need from other countries? Many people are doing this in a bid to reduce DIY costs so as to be able to afford the DIY improvements which their home needs.

It is not an ideal solution due to the exchange rate but bargains are still to be found if you want to buy your jaloezieen from the Netherlands or your rideaux from France. (more...)

The Many Uses of Wall Anchors

The easiest and most effective way to hang anything on a wall is to use a wall anchor. This includes larger picture frames, paintings and even shelves. The size of the anchor you need depends on the weight of the object you intend to hang. What happens if you don’t use an anchor? In all likelihood larger items like shelves and paintings will go crashing to the floor.

Installing a wall anchor is fairly easy, especially when you are hanging smaller items. If there is no available stud for the anchor screw or the Fasteners , an anchor can be inserted into the drywall alone and it will support items of up to ten pounds.

However, if there is an available stud, it is always best to use one for items that are near the ten pound weight limit. Wall anchors are often a cinch to install in studs, once they are found, of course. To locate these studs you may have to use an electronic device called a stud finder. They can be purchased at any hardware or home improvement centre for about ten pounds. (more...)
